If this was street racing, this would be the equivalent of an all-Volkswagen Bug race, but one of the bugs was retrofitted with a Ferrari engine. It just wasn't fair, and I didn't see it coming.
I think they would call that a sleeper? Or maybe a ringer, if this was community softball? I mean, jeez, I know supply and demand by heart and I only intended to mention it for a brief second, but apparently my description was too brief for her liking. Besides, she was talking production side, and I was talking consumer side. Either way... that was mildly annoying. And a killer to confidence and the roll I had worked into.
So now I'm in my 45-minute break of "office hours." I want to eat something, but I don't remember where the part-time faculty lounge is, and I couldn't find it when I wandered around earlier. It's really a pretty nice campus, but I kinda think the students will be a handful. I can tell that my predecessor let them walk all over him...
I also tried to get a hold of Amy while I was waiting here using Gchat. She wasn't on. We had something of a bitter electronic fight earlier, which was way less cool than the statement implies. We became irritated at each other over implied e-mail tones of voice and generally disliked each other for a short time. The fight was over religion, and how she's not terribly comfortable with my apparent embracing of Quakerism. Of course, I'm not comfortable with fundamentalism, and hence rioting ensued.
The inherent problem with fundamentalism of any sort is that it delegitimizes all other viewpoints. It's hard to understand something that's otherwise foreign with that viewpoint. It's totally understandable how she feels, but frustrating nonetheless. Funny thing is, in my more universal viewpoint, I see her path as a valid one (one of many such valid paths), just not one for me.
Go figure.
Okay, I am going back to teach again. Wish me a lucky and ringer-free class...

Sorry I wasn't around on the computer during your break. I miss my laptop! I was busy in the living room. I did try to call your cell though, but you had it turned off. Maybe it doesn't work in the buildings? Anyways. I miss you and you should come home. I'm done with my homework now and being home alone without you sucks. Come home!
