Odd Addictions

I guess it's been since Wednesday? Who knew?
I haven't written much lately for a couple of reasons. It's a strange world when I can write a post about how I haven't written, and it's still just as legit as if it was a post during one of my more-writing times. Then again, this is just a blog.

I've been pouring my mental energies into absolutely useless pursuits the last few days. I guess some people would call these things hobbies, but you shouldn't judge them so politely until you hear how stupid these things are. See, my mental life the past few days has been centered around two things: sports and SimCity 2000.

I've watched more sports the past four days than perhaps the three months before. As with every weekend, I caught a couple of hockey games this weekend with Amy at Kent. Nothing new there. But then, I also caught a college football game I cared nothing about on television, watched the Ball State-Michigan and Kent State-Buffalo games on the internet, and watched the Colts-Patriots game last night. By the way, Ball State nearly turned the college football world upside down and won that game over the number two team in the country. The entire Michigan football world breathed a sigh of relief.

On top of that, I downloaded a pirate version of SimCity 2000 for Mac, a game I played for probably 3,000 or so hours in the eighth grade. I've been playing that after Amy went to sleep. SimCity is so insanely geographic that it's like heroin or something. You start playing, and then four or five hours later you come to, clean the dried drool our of your beard and wonder why you can't see straight, why one leg is asleep and the other is cramping... much akin to Google Earth. I've made two cities, one city along a river called Charleyville and one on a grouping of islands called Turdland. Actually, Turdland is a thing of urban planning art.

I guess these activities are a couple of things. For one, they're obvious regression to simpler times when my mind didn't present as much of an enemy. For another, they're a total distraction and an alternate reality. Perhaps that is why there's a whole generation of computer gamers (as evidenced by this weekend's convention at Amy's hotel) who are totally obsessed with an alternate reality. They need that escape, and it's less destructive (in some ways) than alcoholism or drug use. I know that's why I used to use those types of things in the past.

We also watched some movies, hiked and did some other relaxing activities over the weekend. Honestly, it was the break I needed. I feel much better in my head than last week. I just hope I can round this into a mold of super-productivity for this week.

I'm going to need it.
