So, happy birthday to Amy. You know, my wife? Yeah, she's 24 now. It's a great feeling to know that I'll always beat her at ages, because she can never catch up. I certainly can't top her in any other way, not that I try honestly.
I tried to make the day (plus yesterday) as nice as possible for her. Last night was a trip to the Red Robin down in Canton, because she got a coupon in the email from them offering her a free burger for her birthday. They have excellent (though non-vegan, but Amy went "don't-ask,-don't-tell" for that) veggie burgers. That was the most delicious Gardenburger of my life. Plus, they have free refills on fries, which is the most ridiculous thing anyone ever thought of doing. After that, it was over to Border's where I bought her a book called Vegan with a Vengence (which is her aspiration) and to Coldstone Creamery for sorbet (an excellent vegan ice cream alternative).
Today, after my class was over, I took her some not-dogs with veggie chili and the most delicious french fries in the world (which means assuredly non-vegan) from Main Street Coneys in Kent, then hung out with her for the next couple hours until the end of her shift.
Then, it was to the movie theater to watch Stranger than Fiction, which was honestly one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. Beautiful camerawork, good acting (from Will Ferrell [?], who was actually pretty non-annoying and well-cast) and an excellent story. It reminded me a great deal of a Charlie Kaufman type film, but it was probably just an imitation. It reminded me of a Kurosawa film, too, but I don't remember which one (story, not technique)... it's been a while since I watched that kind of shit. I'll even warn you: you unexpectedly really like Harold Frick, Ferrell's character, which is confusing because normally you want to punch Farrell in the face repeatedly. And also: thank Mr. Jesus Christ for the existence of Maggie Gylnehalnhelallnalelhlnlall (sp?) who plays an anarchist bakery owner and the love interest.
It's probably in my top five of the decade so far, pretty easily. I'm not sure where it sits for sure, but I'm serious -- I liked it that well. You may not. I admitedly get snowed over sometimes by theatrical kitsch, so sometimes my opinions on films are not reasonable to many people. I don't know if it was kitsch, but it may have been. While I recommend it, you have been warned with the Andy-movie disclaimer. Luckily, I am allowed my own opinions, no matter how goofy they are.
Now, Amy has officially brought in her fourth age-change to occur in my presence, and she's sleeping. I couldn't get her much, but I figured time and effort was more important that money.
I think she agreed. Even though it was gloomy outside all day, I don't think I ever saw her without a smile. And that's all I wanted.
