Today, Kent State is honoring military veterans by closing campus and cancelling class. It's kind of stupid, not the honoring veterans part. It's stupid that campus is closed today. See, for one thing, tomorrow is the Veterans' Day holiday. I wouldn't know this (or really care) except that tomorrow is also Amy's birthday. Yep, Amy was born on the 64th anniversary of the armistice of World War I, the celebration of which became Veteran's Day after people forgot about the old farts who fought in "The War to End All Wars" because so many more fought in a bigger, nastier war starting like 23 years later.
Either way, Kent State's celebration sucks. Most years, they cancel all of the classes on the actual day of Veterans' Day, November 11. This year, to ensure that they didn't cheat the veterans because November 11 is a Saturday, they cancelled classes today on the 10th. It sucks because I don't have anything scheduled on most Fridays anyway. The worst part is that tomorrow, which is Amy's birthday, I still have to teach my Saturday class, even though it is on Veterans' Day.
I could cancel it, but it wouldn't be a good thing to do. Once-a-week classes miss a lot of contact time if a meeting is cancelled. And thanks to Kent State's stupid scheduling, we've already planned for Amy to work that day anyway.
Instead, I am honoring America's Military Veterans today in different ways. I woke up about 45 minutes later than normal. I still haven't put on a full set of clothing, only a pair of shorts to take the dogs out. I'm sitting here on the couch, surrounded by dogs, typing on a laptop in a pair of boxer shorts. Did I mention that it's after noon now?
America. Fuck yeah!
In other news, I've determined that Tofurkey brand lunch "meat" is downright terrible. I much prefer the options offered by SmartDeli.
