There's an interesting thought I've been beating to death in my head tonight.
What happened? Well, my dissertation advisor announced today that he's taking a one-semester position at the Geneva Center in Switzerland, a place where Kent State students go to study abroad for semesters and years. He's doing this spring of 2008, which just happens to be when I'm supposed to finish my dissertation.
Now, that's going to be crazy enough, finishing a dissertation while my advisor's overseas. But it reminded me of something. There's one major thing that I've always dreamed of doing, and have never gotten to do. I've always wanted to spend a great deal of time in Europe with the ability to explore at my own pace.
I've had several opportunities to go. My mom nearly took a one-year position at the London Centre my freshman year of high school. I almost went in high school to England for a couple weeks. I was signed up to go for a semester to the London Centre for Spring of my sophomore year, but dropped it when I got involved with Satan. After that, I settled down, got responsibilities, and the opportunity never came back.
When Tom announced his intentions about Spring of 2008, I told him that I was obviously a little concerned about wrapping up my dissertation. He told me, jokingly I think, that I could always write a dissertation in Geneva. If I wasn't so damn responsible for so much, and if I could get a way for Amy to go....
God knows if I found a way for Amy and I to both go and have our stateside bills covered, we could find people to puppy- and kitty-sit. Fat chance, but still.
Hmmm....
