Calling it the "Dog Days" is Offensive to Charley

It's fucking hot. Like really fucking hot. The internet says that the eastern half of the United States is stuck in a heat wave. The highs this week have all been in the mid-90s with oppressive humidity, so the heat index is like 115. It's terrible.
The heat has been sucking out my soul. I've been driving four days a week down to New Philadelphia, which is about an hour south of Akron on a heavily travelled (and heavily under construction) road. The Impala is out of mileage and is now a $277 a month boat anchor. Only 18 months to go in that lease, and each mile costs us 29 cents. No way out.

What a scam.

The trip down to Tuscarawas in the Bug is a little warm to say the least. I always gauge the day by the temperature at the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, which is along the interstate on the way. The sign today said 96 degrees, and that was about noon. When I was returning, it was 99. I don't know how accurate that temperature is, but either way, the point is made.

Two hours in a car per day, sometimes more (when I get stuck in traffic or when I go straight from New Philly to Kent) kills me. By the time I get home, I'm totally exhausted. My body craves hydration and carbs like none other. Tonight, I drank nearly a gallon of water while Amy was at church, and I didn't get slosh-gut.

I really hate GMAC because the lease we're in is such a scam. There's really no way out. What we have to do is park the fucking thing for the next 18 months while we pay monthly payments, then turn the thing in. We could buy it, but then we'd end up paying on this car for ten years total, and we all know how long GM products last.

We're hoping to get a piece-of-shit-car that will last nothing more than a year. We went out today and looked at a 1987 Corolla at the world's shadiest used car lot. We found it online, and it was being offered for $900. The poor thing was nice enough, but he was too far gone. I wouldn't have trusted him to take Amy anywhere, which would have been his purpose.

Why do I anthropomorphize cars so much?

I'm really sick of doing the hot car thing. It kills me every day and makes me worthless for the remainder of the evening. I'm looking forward to fall.

It's bad when the grind of a doctoral program is more attractive.
