A Few Thoughts

This is the first spring break in my history in which I haven't been involved in some huge trip to a destination at least a few states away. Say what you will about my parents, but they travel all the time, and Tim and I were always there too. It feels weird, like this isn't spring break at all. It feels like an endless string of Saturdays... and that sucks because most Saturdays I spend cleaning the house and doing other such stereotypically masculine things. I mean, I'm on vacation, right? I should be able to sit on my ass and watch the paint dry, right? Well, I feel guilty whenever I'm not doing something productive anymore. I've become such a tool!

I have managed to do some writing this past week. I'm getting some ideas on paper for my paper that discussed the local-global linkages of support for the war on terror from the grassroots level using Indiana (die-hard Republicans) as an example. Jim told me that my first step was to get the facts down on paper, and that he would help me get the theory and literature basis next. I'm maybe 15 percent done with the former. It is my last bit of breathing room before finals and such.

I also managed to rearrange the house a little this week. Our house is essentially a 3 bedroom, with one very small bedroom advertised as an office. So, that room was my office, the entire upstairs was our bedroom and the spare (quite large) bedroom had birds and musical instruments. I've stirred that up and deposited the birds in the old office and made the old bird room into the new office.

Say that ten times fast.

Point is, it opens up the house. Better feng shui and shit. Plus, it provides us enough additional room in the office to add another desk (and another workstation) for Amy's new job duties.

Speaking of jobs, I'm trying to find work for the summer. I've got one class I'm teaching at Kent, but that's not going to pay all of the bills. Anyone in the Akron area need a well-trained geographer who will work for pretty cheap? I'll even do GIS if I have to. All this education and no where to work. I could get a job at McDonald's, I guess... but how embarrassing would that be if a former student walked in? It's just not appropriate for the image I have to portray.

I'm such a fucking prick! I should just move our asses to the suburbs, buy a lame-ass fiberboard house, a couple SUVs, join a church, start voting Republican, and have Amy pump out a few kids, force her to stay home all day and give her a substantial budget with which to redecorate the overpriced cardboard house every few weeks... suddenly I care about my image? Whatever happened to working the porno store over summers? Sorry if this is your bag... I don't mean to offend, but it's just not for me.

I'm bitter tonight. Tomorrow will be better: high of 68 and mostly sunny. Gonna drive up to Kent with Pedro's windows down and stereo bumping. And then Saturday? Canada.

Thank you, Mr. Jesus.
